Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned Metro Manila last
16th of this month that if a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hits the NCR, Metro
Manila ad nearby provinces may be isolated due to collapse roads and buildings.
Renato Solidum, a government seismologist said a movement in the West Valley
Fault has been estimated to generate an enourmous tremor that could cause a
tsunami as high as 18 ft. that could damage over 100,000 residential buildings.
Based on geography, Metro Manila may be separated into 4 isolated zones and
collapsed buildings in Makati and Mandaluyong cities as well as the Pasig River
may separate northern and southern parts of metropolis. Nov. 9, 1828 and June
3, 1863 are the 2 recorded occurence when tsunamis of about 2 meters engulfed
the western side of Luzon, including Metro Manila. Massive flooding and fires
may isolate the metropolis aside from the tsunami. According to Andrew McElroy,
disaster risk reduction expert for United Nations International Strategy for Disaster
Reduction (UNISDR), said that their team is leading efforts to make the private
sector more adaptive to the challenges brought about by climate change.
